ArtStart

ArtStart is the MAC's summer art program for children ages 4 1/2 to 9 years, offered in June and July each year.

ArtStart teachers are specialists in music, dance, theater, and art, most of whom teach throughout the year and are professionals in their fields. Activities include arts and crafts, theater, music, games, and storytelling. The ArtStart program runs weekly, from 9:00am‒12:30pm daily, except for July 4 (if it falls on a weekday). Children must bring a bag lunch and water every day. MAC members have access to early registration and receive a significant discount on ArtStart tuition.* 

Early registration for ArtStart 2024 opens for MAC Members on Friday, January 26. Registration for nonmembers will begin on Friday, February 16. Not yet a member? Get a jump on early registration by joining the MAC family today!

*Current MAC membership at the Family level ($75) or above is required for discounted ArtStart tuition and early registration. Visit our membership page here to join the MAC. If you are uncertain if your membership is current, please call the MAC at (508) 748-1266. Any nonmember who registers during early registration period will be placed on hold until registration opens to nonmembers.

Due to very limited capacity, ArtStart fees are nonrefundable unless ArtStart is cancelled.

ArtStart runs 9:00am‒12:30pm daily.

ArtStart Program Director
The Marion Art Center is in search of a program director for ArtStart 2024. The program director must  have ample experience in working with young children, as well as the ability to manage large groups of students of various ages (4.5-10). The ArtStart program director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program and will manage all aspects of ArtStart. The prime candidate delights in creating a nurturing, safe space for interactive, imaginative exploration where children can blossom and grow. The program director should be available for all five weeks of the program, but some exceptions may be made if a suitable substitute can be found. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the health and safety of all children and overseeing activities and movement within and throughout the building and on the MAC property
  • Opening and closing the MAC and all spaces during the program, remaining on site each day and working to ensure that the program runs smoothly and on schedule
  • Communicating with all parents and guardians via email before the start of each session; contacting guardians as needed in case of sickness or emergency
  • Planning weekly themes and offering general guidelines or suggestions to music, theater, and arts and crafts teachers; informing parents ahead of time of weekly themes when necessary
  • Hiring and scheduling counselors and substitute employees as needed for each week, while maintaining an employee database shared with the MAC's executive director; outlining expectations for employees; running employee orientation at the MAC
  • Managing registrations and sorting children into cohorts based on age (three cohorts, usually 10-14 students per group); addressing special requests for pairing children when possible; remaining prepared and mindful of allergies or any health concerns of children
  • Working closely with the MAC's executive director to ensure all supplies are ordered and stocked before and during the five-week program (cleaning and paper products, first aid supplies, approved snacks, art supplies, etc.)
  • Acting as a MAC representative at all times whether on site at the MAC or outside of work hours; presenting a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with MAC families, visitors, and guests

Eligible candidates will be contacted for interview by the MAC's executive director. The new program director will be offered guidance and training prior to the start of camp by the former program director, and some hiring and scheduling of ArtStart employees will be underway.

Music Instructor
The Marion Art Center is in search of a creative movement and music instructor for ages 4.5-9 for its summer program, ArtStart. The music instructor should have ample experience in working with young children, as well as the ability to create an engaging music curriculum based on games, play, movement, creativity, and having fun! The ideal candidate will have a ready assortment of musical games that gets kids up and moving. The instructor may choose to use simple percussive instruments, scarves, and other accessories that aid in creative, musical play. The prime candidate delights in creating a nurturing, safe space for interactive, imaginative exploration where children can blossom and grow. Ideally, instructors will be available to teach all five weeks of the program, but some exceptions may be made if a suitable replacement can be found for any dates the teacher is unavailable.

Arts and Crafts Instructor
The Marion Art Center is in search of an arts and crafts instructor for ages 4.5-9 for its summer program, ArtStart. The arts and crafts instructor should have ample experience in working with young children, as well as the ability to create an engaging artistic curriculum across all age groups. The art instructor should be prepared with new projects for each week of camp that are appropriate for each age group and skill level. The arts instructor will utilize the materials found in the MAC's studio or work closely with the program director to gather needed supplies before the start of the program. The use of weekly themes is encouraged and may be presented by the camp director. The prime candidate delights in creating a nurturing, safe space for interactive, imaginative exploration where children can blossom and grow. Ideally, instructors will be available to teach all five weeks of the program, but some exceptions may be made if a suitable replacement can be found for any dates the teacher is unavailable.

Theater Instructor
The Marion Art Center is in search of a theater instructor for ages 4.5-9 for its summer program, ArtStart. The theater instructor should have ample experience in working with young children, as well as the ability to create an engaging curriculum across all age groups. The art instructor should be prepared with exercises in movement, team building, creative play, and on-stage exploration, appropriate for each age group and skill level. The theater instructor will utilize the costumes and materials available at the MAC. The use of weekly themes is encouraged and may be presented by the camp director. The prime candidate delights in creating a nurturing, safe space for interactive, imaginative exploration where children can blossom and grow. Ideally, instructors will be available to teach all five weeks of the program, but some exceptions may be made if a suitable replacement can be found for any dates the teacher is unavailable.
