Keeping an Artist Journal from the Queer Perspective is a hands-on workshop featuring mixed-media techniques for all-levels of creatives. This program fosters storytelling, community connection, and empowerment through art.
Accessibility: There are several steps with handrails leading downstairs into our lower level studio.
Workshop Overview
This hands-on workshop, led by Boston-based artist and educator George Summers, invites participants to explore journaling and sketchbook practices as a tool for creative expression, identity building, and self-determination. With more than 35 years of experience working in batik and textile arts, George brings a unique perspective shaped by his journey as a gay man forging an artistic career and as a long-standing member of the Boston arts community.
Participants will learn practical strategies for keeping an artist journal that centers their personal narratives—whether through writing, sketching, collage, or mixed media. While George will share examples of his batik work and how it reflects his identity, the core of the workshop focuses on empowering LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to claim their voices and document their lived experiences through creative practice.
Materials & adhesives provided, but it’s encouraged to bring your own collection of images for a unique project outcome. We encourage you to bring your own journal and/or sketchbook.
