Unplugged in the MAC Gallery, Donn Legge & Jack Coleman, Friday, April 12, 2024, 1st set. By Matt Richard
The unplugged jazz series at the Marion Art Center continued last night with a tight fifty-minute set from Boston-based organ and keyboard veteran Jack Coleman and the Southcoast’s own guitar wizard Donn Legge.
Both musicians displayed impressive technique and versatility over a variety of jazz songs and styles, leaning heavily toward the Jimmy Smith sound. Swing, Latin, blues, and even some funk all propelled the fast-moving set, including B3 legend Jimmy Smith’s “Off The Top” and “Midnight Special” as well as Tony Monaco’s “One For Pat” and “Uprooted”.
Crowd favorites were a Ramsey Lewis arrangement of the Seal and Crofts classic ”Summer Breeze” and the dynamic and challenging Chick Correa tune “Armando’s Rhumba”.
In addition to the uniqueness of hosting pure jazz instrumental duos improvising on standards and jazz standards, the Marion Art Center has encouraged the musicians on the unplugged series to include their own compositions.
Legge’s “Miami Bound” and “6 and 4” both shined bright as well as a Coleman original, “Song of Brazil”, co-written with jazz vocalist Jim Porcella who was in attendance.
Throughout the program, Legge and Coleman worked hard to maintain strong grooves, a challenge in this drummerless format. Both musicians played every melody in a very direct and soulful way, including impressive solos with each tune.
Legge played an electric guitar as well as an acoustic guitar. Coleman’s hybrid B3 set-up included three different keyboards; a Nord Electro 6D, a smaller Yamaha keyboard for left hand bass lines and contrasting organ sounds, and a set of foot pedals for even deeper bass lines. Coleman also effectively used a Fender Rhodes sound to full advantage in several of the arrangements.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable set played by two dedicated jazz musicians, each with over forty years of professional experience.
The MAC unplugged jazz series continues this fall with programs in September and November. A separate jazz jam will take place at the end of August. Check the Marion Art Center web page for more info. www.marionartcenter.org
