Description
Based on the bestselling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies the questions and answers that “Sugar” was publishing online from 2010-2012. When the struggling writer was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, Strayed used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small.
Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions that have no answers.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
- Sugar (Female, 30s-50s): A grounded, empathetic writer who uses her own raw life stories to guide others.
- Letter Writer #1 (Any Gender, 20s-50s): Various roles
- Letter Writer #2 (Any Gender, 20s-50s): Various roles
- Letter Writer #3 (Any Gender, 20s-50s): Various roles
Actors will play various roles as Letter Writers and may perform quick character transitions. Characters may be emotional individuals seeking guidance, others with sharp humor and wit, and some who share stories with deep, heartbreaking honesty. Actors will utilize vocal and physical distinctiveness to bring different stories to life.
Audition format: TBA but likely will consist of cold readings from the script.

Tiny Beautiful Things contains mature content and discusses sensitive themes including grief, loss, abuse, and addiction. Portrayals of these real-world struggles are balanced with immense warmth, humor, and hope. The production centers on human connection and healing, and no trauma is physically depicted on stage.
