All auditions will take place in the MAC’s Anne Braitmayer Webb Theater, except for on Sunday, May 31. Auditions will be held in the lower level MAC Studio on the final date.

Description

Get your groove on. This classic play is reimagined for the late 1960s, when women’s liberation was rising, social norms were shifting, and everything was groovy.

This adaptation drops Maugham’s sharp social comedy into the vibrant, swirling world of the late 1960s—a moment when women were questioning marriage, autonomy, and identity with new fire. In this story Constance Middleton, the stalwart wife of a philandering Harley Street doctor, starts reassessing her life and her choices both past and present.  Her decisions are bold and surprising to herself and everyone who knows her. Through it all, Constance emerges as a heroine who discovers her power in a world buzzing with change.

Age ranges represent playable age, not actor age.
All roles open to all ethnicities.

Constance Middleton — 30s–40s
Poised, intelligent, and far more perceptive than anyone realizes. In this 1960s version, she’s a woman awakening to her own independence and economic power. Calm on the surface, steel underneath.

John Middleton — 30s–40s
Constance’s husband. A successful doctor who assumes the world works exactly as it always has. Charming, confident, and utterly unprepared for the shifting gender dynamics of the era.

Marie-Louise — 30s–40s
Constance’s best friend—and John’s lover. Glamorous, dramatic, and self‑absorbed. Think mod fashion, big hair, and a flair for emotional theatrics.

Bernard Kersal — 30s–40s
A longtime friend of the family who harbors feelings for Constance. Witty, cynical, and a bit world‑weary.

Martha Culver — 50s–60s
Constance’s mother. Traditional, opinionated, and convinced she knows exactly how a woman should behave. A perfect foil to the era’s feminist energy.

Barbara Fawcett — 20s–30s
Constance’s younger sister. Modern, idealistic, and fully swept up in the women’s movement. She challenges everyone—especially her mother.

Mrs. Culver — 60s–70s
The family matriarch. Sharp-tongued, old‑school, and not shy about her opinions. A comedic powerhouse role.

Mortimer Durham — 40s–60s
A businessman and friend of the family. Represents the old guard of male authority. Blustery, confident, and occasionally clueless.

The Maid (or Secretary, depending on adaptation needs) — Any adult age
A small but scene‑shaping role. Observant, efficient, and often the only one who sees the whole picture.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. There will be 3 rehearsals a week between 2-2 1/2 hours long, typically in the evening. The schedule will take into account actors’ conflicts.
