Workshop Overview
Explore the luminous and textured world of Line and Wash Watercolor Batik on Kinwashi Paper. This immersive, hands-on workshop teaches students how to combine bold waterproof marker linework with flowing watercolor washes and layers of wax resist to create uniquely vibrant and textured works. Participants will work directly on delicate Kinwashi paper, embracing its fibrous, translucent quality to produce richly layered compositions. The technique draws from traditional batik practices and watercolor traditions in a fresh, accessible way.
By the end of the course, students will:
- Work confidently on Kinwashi paper and understand its unique surface properties
- Create expressive line drawings using waterproof markers
- Layer watercolor and wax to develop texture, color, and depth
- Learn safe and effective wax removal using newspaper and heat
- Gain skills in composition, color layering, and creative experimentation
Materials Participants should bring:
- Watercolor brush set
- Apron
- Optional: Personal watercolor paints and reference image
Materials Provided by Instructor:
- Kinwashi paper
- Reference Drawings
- Beeswax/paraffin wax blend
- Waterproof Sharpie markers (variety of tips)
- Loose parchment paper (used as a working surface beneath the Kinwashi paper)
- Newspaper (used for ironing and wax removal)
- Painter’s tape
- Demo tools: brushes, sponges, irons
- Watercolor palettes

- Some brushes for borrowing

About the Artist
Peter Sterling Turner found his creative outlet as a young man — through various mediums including acting, leather-working, woodworking, cartoon drawing, and occasional birdhouse construction. His educational journey led him through Communications and Liberal Arts programs at California State University, Community College of Rhode Island, and The University of Massachusetts. Turner completed a 15-year apprenticeship with couture fashion designer Francesco Di Russo, also known as Ches Couturier, followed by a three-year apprenticeship and role as a cutter for a wholesale and retail manufacturer specializing in custom apparel and accessories. With a career spanning since 1985, Turner has worked in interior design, textile, and fashion industries, as well as a freelance interior decorator.
In 2009, Turner discovered his passion for painting and describes himself as an Evolutionary Expressionist, noting that all of his paintings are self-portraits. He has joins several art guilds and served six years as a Board Member for The Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County, where he hosted and produced their television program, “Art View,” and organized events. Currently dividing his time between New England summers and the Florida Keys, Turner is an active volunteer at Crane Point Hammock Museum & Nature Center. He serves as President of The Florida Keys Watercolor Society and is a member of art guilds in both regions.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Turner is a published poet and an enthusiastic nature photographer. He possesses a zest for life and a passion for cooking. He still builds the occasional birdhouse.
