Shibori Scarves with Jodi Stevens
Join us for a workshop with textile artist and MAC executive director Jodi Stevens.
You’ll be introduced to Shibori, an ancient Japanese textile tradition dating back to the 8th Century, and you’ll take home two scarves that you’ll make using this technique. Shibori is a process of dyeing cloth through stitching, binding, folding, twisting, and clamping to create unique patterns and textures. After learning about the technique and ways to vary it, you’ll practice on two provided cotton scarves and then submerge them into premixed dye baths. We will also experiment with low-immersion dyeing in order to use several colors at once. In the end, you’ll open up your stitched scarves to see the beautiful, unique patterns created by this versatile technique, which can be practiced at home.
All materials provided. Students should wear old clothes or bring an apron and long kitchen gloves for dyeing.
