Howell & Parsons Exhibition

Marian Howell  loves to use a camera, and she loves where she lives - on a cove on the southeastern coast of Massachusetts.  Of her photographs she says “when you live on the water, nature is a part of your daily life.  Weather is of interest of course, but more essential is the fact that we live on the edge, the thin strip that encompasses the physical transition from land to water, and this makes our relationship to that land and the water very special.”  Her personal photographic pleasures lie in exploring the beauty of this space which is so delicately balanced between the elements.

This passion as a photographer has put her on the Board of the Sippican Lands Trust, an organization whose purpose is to preserve open space for the benefit of both the residents and visitors to the Town of Marion.  It is her privilege and pleasure to photograph for the Lands Trust, both professionally and personally.  “There is a need for documentary images as well as passionate ones, and when the two can be combined...well, all the better!”

Charles Parsons is well-known for his local watercolors and elegant oil paintings.  He has a studio in Marion and is represented in galleries on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, in Philadelphia and throughout New England.  He has studied in Japan as well as at UMass Dartmouth and in Rhode Island.  He paints on site and can be seen with his brushes and sketch pad at the beach, in downtown Marion and other places where you least expect him!  He states: “I try hard to communicate my feelings to others…and so I paint.  Painting for me is a great leveler.  The peaks and valleys of life are put in perspective…I’m not interested in creating work that is disturbing and unsettling.  If I can achieve that end, I won’t be painting in vain.”
